2022 Victorian State Championship Report

Published Sun 13 Mar 2022

The 2022 Victorian State Championships were held at Sandringham Yacht Club on 12th-14th March 2022 with a fantastic turnout of 80 sailors from 4 states.

Day 1

The buzz of the boat park was at an all time high with so many families getting involved. Day 1 started off at registration with some mind blowing gifts from our generous sponsors, which were well received by the kids.

Our green fleet has exploded this year which is encouraging for the future of the fleet with so many new families taking up the sport. The green fleet led by Immi and Nic went extremely well, running three races with all sailors achieving some great milestones. You know you have a successful green fleet when the sailors come off the water with huge smiles.

Our Open and Intermediate sailors were blessed with great racing conditions. The fleets headed out on the water with a 5 knot southerly breeze. The southerly stayed somewhat steady for the duration of the three races with the breeze steadily building throughout the racing with a maximum of 13 knots. Open and intermediate had three great races which is a testament to how well Sandringham run racing.

The sausage sizzle was a fantastic end to the day with, once again huge support from the sailing families.

Day 2

Day 2 started with freshly baked hot cross buns provided by our generous sponsor Bakers Delight, Hampton. The wind was very light, and the first race for Open and Intermediate fleets was a very slow one. A strong tide caused problems for some mark roundings, and a shortened course finished the race at the gate. Shortly after the first race the wind picked up briefly to almost 20 knots before settling down to a steady 13 knots. Open fleet managed a further 3 great races, giving 4 races for the day. Intermediate completed 3 races for the day. Unfortunately Greenfleet didn't manage any races, with winds firstly too low, then too high just as they hit the water.  A sausage sizzle once again concluded the day.

Day 3

Sailors arriving at the yacht club for Day 3 were met with foggy conditions, almost no wind, and uncertainty about whether any races would be possible. While they waited to see what the wind would do, sailors tucked into donuts kindly donated by Krispy Kreme and enjoyed playing the sailing board game Tacking Duels. Luckily the wind filled in, although still staying relatively light, and sailors were able to lauch their boats about 11:30am. Open fleet completed 2 races and Intermediate 3 races for the day, giving a total of 9 races for both fleets for the regatta. Greenfleet completed 5 races for a total of 8 races. Aidan Simmons finished first overall in Open fleet, retaining the title from last year. Lottie Griffith was first girl in Open fleet.

Thanks to Sandringham Yacht Club (particularly James Sly and Mitch Kerr-Read), Race Officer Dean Robson and Deputy Race Officer Stephen Aulich for a very well run regatta. Thanks also to the many volunteers on the water, in the canteen, and in the lead-up to the event, for all their hard work. Thanks to our generous sponsors Cygnett, Rooster, Sly Boat Building & Repair Centre, North Sails, Bakers Delight Hampton, Krispy Kreme, Sandringham Fruit Market and Carman's Kitchen.
