Day 2 of the 2019 Victorian Optimist States has been a day of all wind speeds and most directions. The day started with a lighter breeze from the north which enabled our lighter airs specialists to shine. By the end of the day we saw a good solid 25+ knots with support boats bailing and some very wet volunteers returning to shore. 

Thank you to all the parents and volunteers today for all your help in getting the fleet safely back to shore and signed off. 

Green fleet were able to complete two races before the breeze set in. Going into the last day Leigh Harvie (WYC/MYC) is leading on 13 points, he is closely followed by Jamie Beck (MYC) on 15 points. Currently there is only 1 point separating 3rd place for Miles Levenspiel (MYC) and 4th place Lottie Griffith (SYC). Tomorrow after race 6 the first drop will come into play.

Intermediate fleet completed their first race in 5 knots of breeze and their second in 15 knots so there was plenty of changing of gears required. Currently Natalie Gleeson (SSCBC) is leading Intermediate followed by Callum Simmons (IHYC/RGYC) and Dmitry Sorokin (SYC).

The Open fleet had a very big day on the water with Port Phillip Bay lumps in the afternoon. Racing commenced in approx. 5-7 knots from the north and after the first race the breeze completely dropped out and the breeze started to fill in from the west and it wasn’t long before the sea state started to build. 

In Race 2 on Open fleet the breeze had built to 15-20 knots and the sailors enjoyed some great racing with a building sea state. After Race 2 both of the Intermediate fleet and Green fleet returned to shore and the coaches and support boats moved to the Open fleet to support the sailors in the building breeze. The Race committee tried to get a third race away in a good solid 20-25 knots with a Port Phillip Bay sea state. After a few general recalls there were a bunch of black flags until finally the decision was made to abandon Race 6 to be raced as the first race on day 3. 

Currently Victorian sailor Matty Goss (RBYC/SYC) is leading Open Fleet on 9 points followed by NSW sailor Keizo Tomishima (NSC/WSC) on 27 points and Tasmanian sailor Eddie Reid (SBSC) on 29 points. There is still plenty to play for going into the last day of the regatta.

Final day of racing starts in a few hours with presentation for all fleets to follow shortly after racing.
